The Bizzaro World of credit cards I got a new business credit card. It came from Bizzaro World. Issued by the bank called Bizzaro of America (BoA). I never applied for this card and never told BoA the name of my business. They got this name from some other bank, I believe Bizzaro One. So why they have given it to me? Well, that's just the way things are in Bizzaro World. The only credit cards you get in there are those you never applied for. Now, this might even be slightly amusing, except that it happened in the real world, in these United States of America and not in Bizzaro World. And it is hard to accept as normal. I am not even sure if it is legal. Moreover, this has happened just a couple of years or so after the banks had forced on us tougher bankruptcy laws and raised minimum payments. Because, or so they had argued, they had had to protect themselves from raising bankruptcy rates. I would accept this argument if the banks accepted as much responsibility for bankruptcies as they expect it from their customers. Is issuing credit cards to people who never applied for them a sign of responsibility? Hardly so. It looks like credit cards are now being treated by banks issuing them more and more like gift certificates. Except that they come with strings attached and those strings are no gifts at all. I wrote the above piece about a year ago, in February 2007 or so. Should we really be surprised that a year later we are suffering from a gargantuan credit crunch brought upon us by the very same banks that wanted you to believe that bankruptcy rates could have been reduced by changing the law to shaft the customers? How about some law that shafts the banks, for a change? Now, this will never happen as long as this country is run by two parties that practically don't differ when it comes to the corporate bull.
