What do I know about the Dutch? I have noticed that I receive quite a few visitors from the Netherlands and that a disproportionately large number of the Dutch are among my customers having bought either some of my own products or those that I promote on this site. That's nice and I do appreciate that. But that also prompted me to recall what I really know about the people from this relatively small nation, but nevertheless quite interesting and accomplished. I know that the Dutch are a bit smarter than Poles, but both are slightly behind Germans. The Dutch Wikipedia is among the 10 richest in the world, and while Poles beat them here quite a bit, the Polish language has much more speakers than Dutch, so that's quite understandable. Interestingly though, both Poles and the Dutch beat the Spanish Wikipedia in the number of contributed articles. Considering that Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world and Dutch is not even among the first 20 most commonly spoken languages in the world, the Dutch domination in this area is quite a feat that certainly reaffirms their high intellectual skills. During the World War II, the Dutch distinguished themselves by saving the lives of many Jews; a high number of them have been awarded the honorary title of Righteous Among the Nations. They have a great soccer tradition having reached the World Cup final on two occasions in the 70-ties, during the times the Poland's national team was also at its best. Poland met them in the qualifying round of the European Football Championship at that time. The Dutch turned out to be better and beat us reaching the final round in 1976 and taking the third place. They had to wait another 12 years for their first well deserved trophy, though. The Dutch are also the tallest people in the world, a bit taller than the Danish, but clearly taller than Americans are on average these days. As a physicist by training, I obviously know that the Netherlands has produced quite a few outstanding physicists, both in theory and in experiment. As many as 8 Dutch physicists have been awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics, the last two in 1999. I happened to meet Professor 't Hooft at some physics conference in the US. For a small nation like that, the Dutch are certainly one of the most talented, remarkable people in the world. I am really pleased to have so many of them among my visitors and customers.
