Can you make money online? Want a proof?

I created my first online money making venture in 1996. I was forced to. Sort of, meaning, I was offered pretty good money to host ads on a very popular trading website, probably the first site ever dedicated solely to trading futures, and so I relented. The website was just my hobby and was being hosted on a university server, me being a graduate student at the time, so all I needed to do was to move the site to a commercial server. Which I did and money started to flow. As easy as that for the beach was quite empty then with hardly any competition in sight. And it continued to flow for the following 6 years or so until I took the site down.
It was a darn stupid thing to do! While for me this whole Internet thing was already pretty old as I had been using it for 10 years by then in one form or another, for many, if not the most, people out there, the Internet was just starting. I still regret this decision, even though I am now doing even better hosting ads on another website or two. This was the first and rather painful lesson I learned when it comes to running a business: don't abandon things that make you money too early.
Now, I will not bother you with details because I do not believe they are relevant. Instead, I will focus on what really determines your success in online ventures.
In my opinion, however simplistic it may sound, your online success depends basically on one and one factor only, and the rest is details (which, as I said, I will not go into.) This factor is called the staying power. The longer you stay in the game, the more time and effort you put into your online business, the more likely you are to succeed. No one can predict how fast you will start making a living from your online efforts and it is rather unrealistic to expect to be able to quit one's job after a few months only. Yet this is possible too. Just not very probable. More likely, it will take you a year or two to get the point where you are making a comfortable living from your online business.
Your staying power depends largely on one factor too: your ability to stay motivated and focused. Everything else is, again, details.
As I said, no one can predict how fast and how well you will succeed online. In fact, I believe that it is not a particularly good idea to have set expectations because they will either limit you or, what's even worse, if overly optimistic, they will frustrate the heck out of you. Instead, it's better to settle for making progress. As long as you are making progress, you are doing just fine and only the sky is the limit. And it is only a matter of time and some more effort to get where you plan to be in the long run.
Let me give you an example or even two to illustrate this point. I have 3 online ventures, not counting my day trading business. In one of them, it took me about 2-3 months to get to the level of $100 per month, but now about 2 years later I am making thousands a month. Honestly, I never expected that I would be doing that well, but then again, I even did not know what to expect. On the other hand, it's true that there are people doing even better than me in the same line of business, so it seems that everything is really possible.
The other example concerns another online venture of mine. In it, I am making now 3 times more money now than a year ago and while we are talking about only mere hundred bucks a month, this is a very easy kind of business and it's really the progress that matters in the first place and not the concrete numbers. It is this progress that gives me justifiable hope that much better income is just around the corner.
