And the world richest prize goes to...

This time, the $1.7-million Templeton Prize, the world richest annual prize, went to someone I do know personally as I happened to be a member of his research group way back in mid 80-ies at the time when I was working on my Master's degree in physics as a student at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland.

His name is Michal Heller. Even before meeting Professor Heller, I read a few of his books written in mesmerizing prose that he became so well known of as a writer of popular books on cosmology and philosophy of science. I was a high school student then aspiring to become a scientist one day, although I did not know yet if I wanted to pursue physics or astronomy. Eventually, I got my Master's degrees in both.

I never did any research with Professor Heller unlike some of my friends, quite a few of them, in fact. If only because to quite a few of them he acted as a Ph.D. advisor.

Along with Professor Marek Demianski of Warsaw University, who was an advisor to my Master's thesis research in physics, and a number of younger physicists and astronomers, Professor Heller created in Cracow a very active center of cosmology whose members would meet regularly, at times at his parish house in Cracow.

I was really thrilled to learn about this great recognition of his work. My heartfelt congratulations, Professor Heller!
