Mostly one-liners

I like to collect short, usually humorous, thoughts. They tend to be only about one line long and hence the title of this article. Unless a reference is made to their author, they are originally mine or so I think. I did my best to make sure I am not using someone else's words as mine, but it is not always possible to be absolutely correct.

1. People who work hard should pay for this. That would teach them a lesson.

2. If there were no injustice, there would be no history.
Karel Capek (Apocryphal Tales)

Apocryphal Tales is one of the best collections of short amusing stories I have ever read.  Their author, a Czech, is known mainly for coining the word 'robot,' although he certainly deserves a greater recognition. I had read it first in Polish a very long time ago, but quite recently read it again in English and found it equally good. I highly recommend it.

3. "Remember that from an airplane you always eat only what's inside," Papa Cannibal to Junior Cannibal.

4. It's the spaces between life that I like the most.
Jerry Seinfeld (Seinlanguage)

Seinfeld is the best sitcom ever created in the English speaking world, if not at all, in my humble opinion. I am a big fan of the show and have watched it at least three times... Seinlanguage is a collection of short humorous pieces, some of which were used in the show. I read it just recently and recommend it very much. Here is one funny snippet from the book, that probably was not used in the show:

I have no plants in my house. They won't live for me. Some of them don't even wait to die, they commit suicide. I once came home, found one hanging from a macramé noose, the pot kicked out from underneath. The note said, "I hate you and your albums."

5. All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
George Orwell (Animal Farm)

Animal Farm is one of the most profound satires ever written. When I was first reading it in Polish, I could not help but chuckle from time to time realizing how well it described the communist regime in Poland even though it was by far the most liberal of regimes in the former Soviet block. I re-read it, this time in English, when I was working on my Ph.D. dissertation. I wanted to paraphrase Orwell's famous quote mentioned above and wanted to make sure I got it correct. I ended up reading the whole book and I am sure that it was not the last time I ever read it. I believe that this book should be an obligatory reading in every high school in every country in the world.

6. I'm not religious. In Spain all 22 players make the sign of the cross before they enter the pitch. If it worked, then it would always be a draw.
Johan Cruijff

Johan Cruijff was one of the most brilliant players in the history of soccer. Clearly, not only in the pitch.

7. Never eat yellow snow.

Don't ask me why...
